Best Time to Visit Park City: A Season-by-Season Guide

When is the best time to visit Park City, Utah? A season-by-season guide to skiing, summer trails, fall color and quiet spring weeks, from a Pinebrook rental.

Every season in Park City has its own reason to come.

Most people picture Park City in January, with fresh powder and packed lifts. That is a great trip, but it is only one of four. The mountains around town change a lot through the year, and each season suits a different kind of traveler. Here is how we would pick the right time for your trip, based on what you want to do while you are here.

          1. Winter: ski season (about late November to mid April)

Winter is why most guests book. Park City Mountain and Deer Valley sit right next to town, and Canyons Village is about 10 minutes from the house. If you want to explore, the Cottonwood Canyon resorts (Snowbird, Alta, Solitude and Brighton) are under an hour away, depending on the road and the weather.

The holidays and Presidents' Day week fill up first, so book early if your dates are fixed. January and early February often have the best snow with fewer crowds than the holiday weeks. March brings longer, sunnier days and softer spring snow, which many families love.

After a day on the slopes, the heated garage and boot dryer mean dry, warm gear for the next morning. Plan your mountain days with our

          2. Spring: quiet weeks and spring skiing (April to May)

Spring is Park City's secret. Early April can still mean bluebird ski days and sunny après on the deck. Once the lifts close, town gets quiet, and you can often find more open dates.

Snow can linger on the peaks well into May while the valley turns green. It is a good time for a slow getaway, a remote-work week or a reunion when you want the whole house to yourselves without the winter rush.

          3. Summer: trails, cool mornings and long evenings (June to August)

Summer surprises first-time visitors. Days are warm, evenings are cool, and the mountains open up for hiking and mountain biking. The neighborhood has trails close by, and there are many more around Kimball Junction and town.

Summer evenings are made for dinner on Main Street, outdoor concerts and a slow morning coffee on the front porch. If you have kids, the resorts run summer activities that make it easy to fill a week.

          4. Fall: golden aspens (September to October)

For many locals, fall is the best season of all. The aspens usually turn gold from mid September into early October, and the hillsides glow. The air is crisp, the trails are quieter, and the light is beautiful at sunrise.

Fall is a great choice for couples, scenic drives and photographers. Peak color timing changes a little each year, so keep your plans flexible if you can.

          So when should you come?

Come in winter for skiing, summer for trails and long evenings, fall for color, and spring for a quiet escape. Wherever your dates land, our 3-bedroom Pinebrook townhouse sleeps 9 and sits about 15 minutes from downtown Park City.

Park City Ski Trip Packing List (and What's Already at the House)

A simple Park City ski trip packing list, plus what's already waiting at our Pinebrook townhouse: heated garage, boot dryer, Frette linens and a full laundry.

          Pack less and ski more.

Packing for a ski trip can feel like packing for a small expedition. Boots, layers, goggles, gloves, and that is before anyone remembers a toothbrush. The good news is that a lot of what makes a ski week comfortable is already at our townhouse. Here is what to bring, what you can leave at home, and a few local tips that make the first morning on the mountain go smoothly.

          1. What to bring for the mountain

           Base layers:

two sets per person, wool or synthetic. Skip cotton, which stays wet and cold.

           Mid layer:

a fleece or light puffy for cold mornings on the lift.

           Shell jacket and ski pants:

waterproof is best for storm days.

           Helmet and goggles:

bring a low-light lens for snowy days if you have one.

Gloves or mittens, neck gaiter and ski socks:

one pair of socks per ski day is a nice luxury.

           Sunscreen and lip balm:

Park City sits at about 7,000 feet, and the sun off the snow is strong, even in January.

Your lift passes or rental confirmations:

booking rentals and passes ahead online usually saves money and time.

          2. What's already at the house

We set the house up for ski weeks, so you can leave some of the bulky stuff at home.

           Heated garage:

load the car out of the cold, and no scraping ice off the windshield in the morning.

           Boot dryer:

boots and gloves go on the dryer at night and come off warm and dry for the next day.

           Mudroom with ski storage:

a bench, shelves and hooks keep wet gear out of the living space.

           Frette linens and towels:

no need to pack bedding or bath towels.

           Full kitchen:

cook breakfast before first chair and pack lunches if you like.

           TV in every bedroom

and an Xbox for the kids after a long ski day.

          3. Pack lighter with the laundry room

The house has a full-size washer and dryer, so you do not need a fresh outfit for every day of a week-long trip. Pack for three or four days, run a load mid-week, and you will have more room in the suitcase for souvenirs, or for skipping the checked bag fee altogether.

          4. Getting here and getting around

Salt Lake City airport is about 30 minutes from the house in good conditions. We recommend a car, ideally one with all-wheel drive or good winter tires, since storms can roll in fast. From Pinebrook, Canyons Village is about 10 minutes away and downtown Park City is about 15. Our

Planning a Family Trip to Park City: Why Pinebrook Works

Planning a Park City family trip? Why a Pinebrook townhouse with a bunk room, family room and full kitchen makes a ski or summer week easier for groups of up to 9.

Room for everyone, close to everything.

A family trip to Park City is a lot of fun, but finding a place that works for everyone can be tricky. Hotel rooms get cramped fast, and condos in the middle of town can be loud and pricey. Pinebrook, a quiet neighborhood just outside Park City, is a great middle ground. Here is why families and groups like staying there, and what to look for in a rental.

          1. Space to spread out

Our townhouse has 3 bedrooms and 6 beds and sleeps up to 9. The parents get real bedrooms with king beds, and the kids get a bunk room of their own, with a twin-over-full and a twin-over-twin bunk bed and their own TV.

Downstairs, a separate family room with a big sectional gives the kids somewhere to unwind while the adults stay upstairs by the fireplace in the great room. Two floors of living space make a big difference on a week-long trip.

          2. Meals together, without eating out every night

Eating out three times a day adds up quickly for a family in a resort town. With a full kitchen and a dining table for eight, you can cook breakfast before ski school, pack lunches and save restaurants for the nights that matter. Grocery stores at Kimball Junction are just a few minutes away.

          3. Close to the slopes, away from the crowds

Pinebrook is quieter than staying in town, yet Canyons Village is about 10 minutes away and downtown Park City is about 15. Park City Mountain and Deer Valley are both close, and the airport is about 30 minutes, which matters when you are traveling with tired kids. A heated garage and boot dryer make ski mornings easier for everyone.

          4. Things to keep the kids happy

After a long day outside, there is an Xbox for the kids, a TV in every bedroom and plenty of room to play. In summer, there are trails nearby for easy family hikes and bike rides. Children of all ages are welcome. For ideas, see our
